Bread And Butter Pickles

Ingredients
- 4 quarts cucumbers, sliced
- 6 onions, sliced
- 1 green pepper
- 1 sweet red pepper
- 3 garlic cloves
- 1/3 cup salt
- 1 1/2 teaspoons turmeric
- 1 1/2 teaspoons celery seeds
- 2 tablespoons mustard seeds
- 5 cups vinegar
- 6 cups sugar
- 2 cups water, frozen in ice cube trays
Recipe
- 1 wash cukes but do not peel. slice thin.
- 2 add sliced onions, peppers cut in narrow strips; add garlic cloves, sprinkle the salt over the layers as you work.
- 3 now mix a tray of ice cubes through the pickles, put another full tray on top. let stand 3 hours.
- 4 drain cucumber mixture thoroughly and discard ice.
- 5 combine vinegar sugar and spices. pour over cucumber slices.
- 6 heat to boiling point. pour in hot sterilized jars and seal in boiling water bath. age before using. yield 6-7 pints.
