Brown Irish Soda Bread

Ingredients

- 1 cup whole wheat flour
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 3 tablespoons butter
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 egg, beaten
- 3/4 cup buttermilk
- 1 egg, beaten
Recipe
- 1 in a bowl combine flour, baking powder, baking soda, and 1/4 t. salt.
- 2 cut in butter.
- 3 combine 1 egg and buttermilk and add to flour mixture; stir till just moistened.
- 4 on a lightly floured surface, knead gently for 12 strokes.
- 5 on a greased baking sheet, shape dough into a 6-in. round loaf.
- 6 cut a 4-in. cross, 1/4-in. deep, on the top.
- 7 brush with one beaten egg.
- 8 bake for 35 minute in a 375 degree oven.
- 9 cool on rack.
